The abc, or alphabet system, is used in languages in which words are made up of letters which each have a unique sound.
The European alphabet probably originated somewhere in the present-day Middle-East, was used by the Phonecians (an ancient seafaring population that founded Carthage and did a lot of trading), and spread to the Greeks, who adopted it and changed it a bit. Then it was used to write latin, and we’ve now got it because of that!
