Certain games are very social anyway. If you are playing a team based game with friends online, you will have to communicate with them, resolve conflicts, share resources, set common goals, distribute tasks etc. All of which are the exact same skills you need in the real world.

A few studies have demonstrated that people are more comfortable contributing in an online environment. So someone who is too quite to speak up in class, will do in a game. This can be used as a stepping stone, so the person feels comfortable sharing their ideas and with some positive reinforcement will start to feel more confident.

So games can be used as a stepping stone and a safe environment for developing real world social skills.
