When flying gliders you take off using a winch or behind a small airplane that is towing you. Most of the time you fly at 1500 ft, but you slowly lose height unless you can find sources of lift to keep you at that height or to go higher. As long as you know how to control the aircraft you should be safe at all heights, but at some point you are simply concentrating on landing back at the airfield you took off from. Flights usually last about 5 to 10 minutes unless you can find a source of lift.
