      Great question!

Due to the number of other stars and planets in the universe its suggest that life has to exist (statistically speaking) somewhere else. However, as the universe is billions of years old and is billions of light years wide. The chances of us existing at the same time and being close enough with the technology to communicate is very low.

What is worrying though. Is say a ship appeared above Earth. For the aliens to have mastered faster than light travel they must be incredibly advanced, so much so that our frames of reference would be so far removed we could not communicate properly.

It would parking a car next to an ant colony and trying to explain to the ants how a car works.
