  The smoke contains a lot of smoke particles that irritate the lining of the lungs and cause it to inflame. Its a bit as if you always scratched yourself in one place, it would end up hurting a lot!

Tobacco damages the epithelia and throat lining, it also clogs up cells that are trying to clear the tobacco tar out.
