The Earth has a number of layers: the crust, which is what we walk on, the upper mantle, and the mantle, followed by the outer core and the inner core. We know that the inner core at the centre of the Earth is solid and rotating and that it is about 760 miles across. It is believed that it contains mainly iron and nickel and it is about the same temperature as the surface of the sun.
