As a PhD student it really depends on what I am doing. We are expected to work 8 hours a day for 5 days a week, but we are fairly flexible on how we use our time. But that also means we have a responsibility to get the work done in our own time. I usually start to work at 8 and work until 7, but I have a break in the afternoon to go for a run. When I am really busy I might have to work from 6 am until 10 pm and sometimes you need thinking space, and then it looks like you work less as you just try to collect your thoughts over a couple of days. So it really depends on what sort of work you do at the moment and as a researcher it is very important to have time management skills as nobody really tells you what you have to do each day.

That depends on when I am teaching or when I have meetings.
My preferred working day starts around 10 – 10.30 (I am so not a morning person).
I prefer to work later in the evening instead.

Depends on the day – sometimes its best for me to try and think about what I’m trying to do, what my next experiment should be, and on those days I might not go into work at all! Otherwise, if I need to get the experiments done or analyse the results I generally start at 9-10: I hate early mornings!
