      Nice question.
A Phd stands for Doctor in Philosophy. Obtaining this degree demonstrated that you are capable of independent research. In a science discipline this means that you were able to solved a scientific problem on your own. During your studies, you have a supervisor who helps you in identifying your problem and gives you guidance in your search of a solution to the problem that you have chosen. In the UK, a phd takes about 3.5 years to complete. At the end you produce a document which is called a dissertation. This dissertation is examined by two experts in your chosen discipline and you have to “defend” your work. You have to demonstrate the the work is yours and that it is of sufficient quality.

And most importantly after defending your work you graduate and obtain your Dr title 🙂
