When we are sleeping certain parts of the brain are ‘switched off’ or don’t work as they should as they’re being repaired. So when we are waking up the part of our brain associated with memory is not working well enough to form new memories.
However, there are some times when you can remember your dream. Sleep has a number of different phases and we are most likely to have our strongest, most vivid dreams in our REM phase (the deepest phase of sleep). If we wake up in this phase we will be most likely to remember them. Though sometimes I find it’s best not to 😉
