There can be two reasons. Either you did not get enough sleep or your body is more attuned to a different sleeping pattern.

Your REM cycle is very important in sleep. REM is a state of deep sleep and is when you are at your least ‘wakeful’, it is characterized by intense dreams and Rapid Eye Movement -> REM.

If you are woken up during a REM cycle you will much less well rested and more groggy. So its better to wake up during a cycle closer to being ‘wakeful’.

You can use this calculator to predict when you will enter REM and thus when the best time to go to bed is when you have to be up at a certain time.

Indeed, you don’t want to wake up in a REM cycle. Our sleep usually goes through all the stages in 90 minutes, so you should try to get 7 and a half hours of sleep for optimal energy levels on the next day and waking up after the last REM cycle has finished.

But sometimes it’s just hard, because our bed is nice and warm and cosy!
